Gang Prevention Strategies

Gang prevention is something that we have had trouble keeping under control since the beginning of humankind, however the more we try the worse it seems to be getting.

Gang prevention seems as if this is indeed a duty for all of us, but where exactly do we start? Did the problem of gangs grow to such an extent that individuals feel helpless. Or do we think we cannot help so we stop trying to.

Regardless of the fact that gangs are such a big societal problem many are not aware of what gangs really are about. For us to be able to stop gang activities, it is important to know what a gang is and what they do. Because police officials are buried in cases that involve gangs, they appreciate the help that people give in reporting any gang related crimes.

A gang is generally an organized group of people that share similar traits. They have a name, wear the same colours and engage in illegal acts. Usually gang members come from poverty stricken areas and troubled families and find comfort, acceptance and support in their gangs. They view their fellow gang members as their new family and literally will do anything for this synthetic family.

Starting to eradicate gang formation begins by looking at why people join gangs in the first place. Because gangs are the result of people being in bad situations financially and family wise, a plan to mitigate such social problems must be included in gang prevention. More employment opportunities must exist for young people and they should receive acceptance and support elsewhere, and not from gangs.

Gang prevention can also start at home if you think you might know someone involved in gang activities. You will be able to spot a gang member, if you see that person has changed their dress sense and behaviour and all of sudden, has more money and property. If you notice the signs and feel that someone you know is a gang member, then you should report it to the officials. If we try to ignore that gangs exist and feel it's not our problem, it will only escalate. It is often that gangs are more personal to us than we think.

One of the best strategies for gang prevention is to make sure that young people have plenty to do. You should try to make sure that they fill their time with wholesome and productive activities and don't just spend time with their friends hanging around on the streets, organised hobbies, sports and after school clubs are an excellent way of keeping young people occupied and provide a sense of belonging.

Faith based organizations are one of the largest gang prevention groups. They assist in all aspects of crime prevention but because they are greatly concerned about the youth, they strive to prevent gangs. Their view is that it is easier for young people to change their paths if they are given more positive things to do, so this is often their focus.

Gang members need to realize that gangs only bring a wasted future and certainly are no solution. Gang prevention should deal with the individual involved in order for them to have hope for a better life.
